Sifting for Gold - Ice Water Hash Vs. Dry Ice Sift - Quality or Quantity?

Siftin’ for Gold
We get a lot of questions from the Sasquad about which is better for pressing? Ice Water Hash, Or Dry Sift?
And while we have our opinions, You’ll have to decide for yourself whether one is ”better” than the other. Ice water hash/bubble hash WILL get you a more potent end product, but requires more time, finesse, and a few more supplies than good ol fashion dry sifting. We wont go too far deep into the actual “how to” of making Bubble Hash, but we can at least express the basic differences between Dry Ice Extraction and Ice Water Extraction.

When it comes to making hash, the process is quite simple and requires little more than Freezing Temps, and Micron Filter bags. To put it simply, when making hash all we are doing is getting our flowers/buds so cold, that the Trichome heads in essence fall or “break” off the plant material, leaving behind the buds, and leaving you with nothing but the “heads”. These Trichome heads or “Trichs” as some put it plainly, hold the THC and other vital cannabinoids that give marijuana its therapeutic effects. Smoking hash is also considered to carry less health risks than smoking traditional flower due to there being little to no plant material left behind to combust.

NOTE:
the combustion or igniting of plant material and inhaling smoke is not good for your health- vaporize both your flower and extracts whenever possible
The biggest difference between the two is the use of Ice Water in the process.  By using FREEZING cold water, this allows for the flower to have a more gentle extraction process leaving behind the plant material, all while preserving the quality of the Trichomes by allowing for lower agitation levels of the Trichs.
With the Use of a Hash washing machine and Wash bags, You can begin to experiment with this process, which are relatively inexpensive.

The Collecting and Drying of the finished extract comes with a territory. Since we are using water…things tend to get..well, pretty wet. Your hash will require  a drying process, either through methods of Freeze Drying  - which can dry your hash in hours -  or Micro- planing and air drying  - which could take days or weeks -  depending on how much you’ve collected, and runs the risk of mold if not properly stored during dry time.
Risks aside, the process of Dry Ice Hash takes little to no time and a lot less effort when comparing to the process of bubble hash. Not only can you extract and collect right away (no drying time required). It takes less time for the head to begin to separate from your material resulting in an all around FASTER extraction process. With yields typically outweighing the total yields of the same material extracted through means of Ice Water. This could be due to the fact that more plant matter is susceptible to finding its way into your kief/sift, which is harder to eliminate when working with such cold, brittle material.
NOTE:
If the Trichomes get agitated too roughly, you can bruise, and even RUPTURE your heads, leading to loss of potency.

Its fair to say, both have their rightful place in the solventless landscape and  really comes down to the  age old “Quality over Quantity” discussion– Not to say that dry sift Can’t produce some pretty decent rosin. But the ability to retain the quality and overall POTENCY of your hash is higher when making bubble hash due to the preservation of the heads during the process.

We will go into more of the actual Bubble Hash making process in the future, but for now Let us know your thoughts in the comments! And feel free to call us anytime!
We look forward to connecting
